Free Legal Respresentation for Low-Income Individuals

Students have the opportunity to represent clients and participate in real cases through four clinical courses: Civil Practice Clinic, Criminal Justice Clinic, Tax Clinic, and the Innocence Project. The program is optional for third-year law students who meet the requirements and priorities of the Clinic Selection Process. If selected, students will receive real-world experience by providing free legal representation and counseling to qualified low-income individuals. Full-time faculty members who have extensive trial experience at both the state and federal levels teach the clinical courses. In addition to the client-based clinics, an Advanced Dispute Resolution Clinic allows students to gain practical skills in mediating actual disputes through the Dispute Resolution Center.

In addition to the Clinical Programs, students may choose to become involved in the Student Public Interest Initiative, a student organization at the law school. Individuals and groups participate in initiatives that aid low-income individuals, people with disabilities, and minorities in the surrounding area. For more information, please visit the Web site: Student Public Interest Initiative.

Recycling at the Law School

Law students in the Environmental Law Society (ELS) have taken it upon themselves to promote environmental awareness and to advocate stewardship and conservation of natural resources at the Texas Tech University School of Law and within the Lubbock community. In addition to several other initiatives, the ELS maintains the recycling program at the law school where they make available bins for various recyclable products. Students interested in supporting a recycling program may contact the ELS. For more information, please visit the Web site: Environmental Law Society.

Volunteer Services at Local Animal Shelters

The Haven Animal Shelter, the South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and the Lubbock Animal Shelter all are in constant need of support from the community. Law students in several student organizations at Texas Tech University School of Law involve themselves in the lives of these animals by volunteering their time with cleaning, feeding, playing, and providing general animal care. Additionally, charity drives for the shelters are given during the holiday season where all members of the Texas Tech University School of Law and participating communities become involved and donate to these important causes.
