Keynote Speaker

William B. Dawson (’75) is a partner in the Dallas office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is “best known for his high-profile representation of accounting firms in professional liability disputes” (Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, 2009 ), but he leads trial teams in patent infringement and technology licensing disputes around the country and is noted for his defense of lawyers. He is seasoned in energy-industry lawsuits, white-collar criminal matters, and securities litigation. He is past-chair of the Science and Technology in the Courts Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Mr. Dawson is consistently recognized as a leader in litigation. He was named Best Lawyers’ “Lawyer of the Year” for Bet-the-Company Litigation — Dallas in 2011, and has been consistently included in The Best Lawyers in America® for Bet-the-Company and commercial litigation (2003–2013). He has been named one of seven “Leading Individuals” in Texas “Dispute Resolution” by Practical Law Company’s Which Lawyer? Yearbook (2009). He was recognized as a Super Lawyer (2003–2012) and named a “Local Litigation Star” in Texas for IP, Securities Litigation, Energy Law and Professional Liability by Euromoney’s Benchmark Litigation (2008–2009, 2013). He was also named to the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers in commercial litigation (2006, 2008).

Mr. Dawson received his J.D. with highest honors from Texas Tech University School of Law. He also holds a B.B.A. from Texas Tech University. In March 2013, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech Law during the Ninth Annual Law School Gala.

Mr. Dawson was admitted to practice in Texas in 1975. He is also admitted in the United States Supreme Court; Supreme Court of Texas; all federal district courts in Texas; the Courts of Appeals for the Third and Fifth Districts of Texas; U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado; U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan; and U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Mr. Dawson is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is an active member in the American Law Institute, serving as an Adviser on the current ALI project, the Restatement of the Law Third, Torts: Liability for Economic Harm. He is a member of the Fifth Circuit Bar Association and serves on the Board of Trustees for The Center for American and International Law.

Reception Information


A reception will be held in the law school Forum for graduates and their guests at 3:00 p.m. the day of graduation. Guests may enter through either the Lanier Center or main law school entrance. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., graduates and guests are welcome to tour the law school building. There will also be cookies and water available in the library throughout the day.

Guest Information


The law school parking lot (Indiana Avenue and Texas Tech Parkway) will be open to the public the day of graduation.

Graduate Information


Please order your regalia from the Barnes & Noble in the student union building by November 8. Orders placed after November 8 and before the final deadline of November 15 will incur a $25 late fee.
