GPA Requirement

The student must maintain a B average in the core and elective courses taken toward credit for the Certificate.

Participation Requirement

The participation requirement for the Law and Science Certificate is an annual participation requirement for the 2L and 3L years and can be met through one or more of the following:

  1. Each year, the student must participate in an activity sponsored by the Law and Science Program or the Center for Biodefense, Law and Public Policy such as the Law and Science Symposium, or Law and Bioterrorism Symposium.
  2. Officer positions with the Environmental Law Society (ELS); or other student organizations such as a Law and Science Student Association (LASSA) or an Intellectual Property Student Association (IPSA).
  3. A practicum in an area of law and science, approved by the Director; which may or may not qualify for externship credit through the School of Law supervised externship program.

Writing Requirement

A paper on a topic in law and science must be completed by the student under the direction of an Associated Faculty member of the Law and Science Program, on the School of Law faculty. The paper must be a minimum of 25 pages in length, double-spaced, twelve-point font, Blue Book style footnotes, including sources from both law and science publications. Law sources must include primary or secondary sources and science sources must include a peer-reviewed science journal. The paper, meeting these requirements may be completed in the following manner:

  1. Independent research with an Associated Faculty member. The student’s Associated Faculty Advisor will most likely direct any independent research. This paper may be completed under the direction of the Associated Faculty member through an established schedule of no less than monthly meetings to review revised outlines and drafts with the student, until completion.
  2. A paper written to satisfy a seminar or course requirement.
  3. A paper written to satisfy a law journal writing requirement.

The paper should cover a topic relevant to the chosen specialization.
